Car hire requirements

The requirements for hiring a car in Spain vary depending on the rental company and the type of vehicle, although most providers have similar minimum requirements.

Drivers must hold a valid driving licence that covers the category of vehicle they wish to hire. Most companies also require the licence to have been held for at least one year.

Spanish residents should present a valid Spanish driving licence. International visitors may use a driving licence issued in their home country, provided it is valid for driving in Spain. In some cases, an International Driving Permit (IDP) may also be required, particularly if the original licence is not written in the Latin alphabet.

All drivers will also need to present a valid passport or national identity card, together with an accepted method of payment, usually a credit card in the name of the main driver.

Many rental companies apply a young driver surcharge to customers under the age of 25, although the minimum age, surcharge and conditions vary between companies. Some vehicle categories, particularly premium or luxury models, may also be restricted to older drivers or those with more driving experience.

Insurance and cover

Most car hire agreements include basic insurance, which typically covers third-party liability, theft of the vehicle and damage cover subject to an excess. However, the level of cover varies depending on the rental company and the rate selected, so it is advisable to check the terms and conditions before confirming your booking.

The excess is the maximum amount the customer is required to pay if the hired vehicle is damaged and the claim is covered by the insurance. Any repair costs above the excess are normally covered by the insurer, subject to the policy terms.

If you wish to reduce or remove the excess, you can usually purchase additional cover when booking your vehicle or when collecting it. This option involves an extra daily charge but significantly reduces or eliminates your financial liability in the event of covered damage.
